Set on a shelf beneath an exposed beam, or on the nightstand on the side where the ceiling drops. This is a modern placement rather than a classical one — it appears in twentieth-century practice, not in the older texts.

What it is

A single point of natural clear quartz from Donghai in Jiangsu, cut and polished by hand. Untreated and undyed. Every piece is a different shape, and the inclusions and veils inside differ from one to the next — that is what natural quartz looks like, and a perfectly clear one at this size would not be natural.

Where it is placed, and one honest note

In current practice it is set beneath an exposed beam, or on the nightstand on the side where the ceiling drops — the situation covered in is a beam over the bed bad feng shui.

This placement is modern. It appears in twentieth-century and contemporary practice, not in the classical texts, which treat a beam as a matter of where you put the bed rather than what you put under the beam. We would rather say that than imply an older pedigree than the object has.

If the bed can be moved, the tradition moves the bed. This is what people use when it cannot.
