Feng shui for a children's bedroom, computed not asserted

A child’s bedroom is a bedroom. In Eight Mansions (八宅, Ba Zhai) it takes the same rules as any other — a good sector for the room, a solid wall behind the headboard, the head pointing to one of the occupant’s four favorable directions — with one difference that matters more than it sounds: the four favorable directions belong to the child, computed from the child’s own birth year. They are usually not the parents’ four, and with two children they are often not each other’s either.
The child’s own Kua number, worked through
Two examples, both run through this site’s tables rather than copied from anywhere.
A girl born in 2018 comes out at Kua number 6, the Qian trigram (乾), west group. Her four favorable directions are west, northeast, southwest and northwest. A boy born in the same year, 2018, comes out at Kua number 9, the Li trigram (離), east group, with north, east, southeast and south.
Same birth year, opposite groups, and not one direction shared between them. That is not a quirk of 2018 — the arithmetic in Eight Mansions runs differently for boys and girls, and the two group memberships have no overlap at all. Every east group person’s four favorable directions are north, east, southeast and south. Every west group person’s are northeast, southwest, west and northwest. The sets are disjoint, which is a fact about the tables, not a rule of thumb.
Now add a parent. Someone born in 1988, female, comes out at Kua 3 — east group. So in a household with that mother and both children above, the mother and the son share a set of four and the daughter shares it with neither.
Two cautions on getting the number:
The year turns at the start of spring, not on 1 January. A child born in the first days of February can belong to the previous year for this purpose. In 2019 the start of spring fell on 4 February 2019 at 11:14 in the morning, so a child born on 3 February 2019 — and a child born at 9 a.m. on the 4th — counts as a 2018 birth here. Calculators that hardcode 4 February get the day right for 2019 and wrong for a lot of other years. Ours computes it; the Kua number calculator takes a birth time for exactly this reason.
The arithmetic sometimes produces a 5. There is no trigram numbered 5, so standard practice substitutes 2 for males and 8 for females, and some teachers handle it another way. If a page reports a child as a 5 without saying it was substituted, it stopped halfway. We wrote up that case separately.
What a square room can actually give a child
Here is where the two examples above stop being symmetrical. A headboard flat against a wall points at one of four directions — north, east, south or west. Diagonals are not reachable that way.

So in an ordinary rectangular room the boy has three of his four to work with and his sister has exactly one. Not because anything is wrong with her chart — because three of her four are diagonal and a flat headboard cannot point at a diagonal. Practitioners handle this by angling a bed out from the corner, which is a real practice and something the bedroom layout generator does not model. Every position it returns has the headboard flat on a wall.
If both children share a room and share a headboard wall, they share one direction. When their groups differ, that single direction cannot be favorable for both, because the two sets do not intersect. There is no version of the rule that resolves that. Bunk beds make it stricter still: the tradition has no instruction for a stacked bed at all, so anything you read about the top bunk versus the bottom is somebody’s extension of it.
The rules that do not depend on anybody’s birth year
These are the settled bedroom items, and they apply to a child’s room unchanged. The full checklist sorted by how much sources agree has the long version.
- A solid wall behind the headboard, not a window and not a doorway.
- The bed not lying in the straight path of the door.
- The door visible from the pillow.
- No exposed beam over the head of the bed.
- The headboard not sharing a wall with a bathroom.
- Room to walk on both sides where the floor allows it.
Which room in the home becomes the child’s room is the location question, and Eight Mansions answers that from the building’s sitting direction rather than from the child — the compass bagua prints the eight sectors for a given facing direction. A desk in the room is treated like a study: a good sector for the desk, and then the child faces one of their own favorable directions while sitting at it, which is the direction they look, not the way the furniture points. Those are opposite answers from the same wall, and the desk direction tool works it out per wall.
Nothing here is about how a child behaves
Eight Mansions attaches names to directions. Fu Wei (伏位) carries a theme of stability, Tian Yi (天醫) of recovery. Those are labels the tradition gives a direction, and it is very easy to slide from a label to a claim about a child — that a bed points the right way and school or sleep or temperament follows. We do not make that claim, we have not seen it tested, and the method page says the same for every tool here.
What is left is checkable: the Kua number is arithmetic, the sectors come from a compass bearing, and the wall behind the headboard is either solid or it is not.
