Which way should your desk face in feng shui?

Published 2026-08-20

Your desk direction is the direction you are looking while you sit at it. That is the whole definition. Move your chair to the other side of the same desk without touching the desk, and the answer becomes the opposite direction, because you are now looking the other way.

The answer for each wall

A desk can meet a wall two ways: pushed against it with you looking at the wall, or out in front of you with the wall behind your chair. Both are real arrangements and our tool scores both. Here is what each one does to the direction you end up looking, in a room square to the compass. “The north wall” means the wall on the north side of the room.

That table is not an opinion. It is facingDirection in src/lib/office.ts, which is the function the desk tool calls before it scores anything.

Where the mistake comes from

The confusion is inherited from the bedroom, where the rule genuinely is different. A bed is judged by the direction the sleeper’s head points toward, so a headboard flat against the north wall gives a bed direction of north. A desk on that identical wall gives north or south, and which one depends entirely on where the chair is.

So a single wall answers the two questions differently. Any page that maps walls to directions once and then uses that map for both pieces of furniture has to be wrong about one of them.

Four checks you can run on anyone else’s advice

1. Does it say where you sit? “Put your desk against the east wall” is ambiguous by half the compass. Without the seat, the instruction has two opposite meanings and the writer has not chosen between them.

2. Does it hand you a diagonal? With the desk parallel to a wall in a room square to the compass, the only directions available are north, east, south and west. Advice that tells you to look southeast, with no instruction to angle the desk away from the wall, has skipped a step.

3. Does it use one wall map for beds and another for desks? If the same article says a headboard on the north wall is a north-facing bed and a desk on the north wall is a north-facing desk, only one of those can hold.

4. Is it actually answering a location question? “Put the desk in the southeast part of the room” is about which patch of floor the furniture stands on. “Look southeast” is about the chair. Eight Mansions (八宅, Ba Zhai) takes different inputs for the two — your birth year for the direction you face, the building’s sitting direction for which sector a corner falls in.

Two routes to one direction, scored

Take an empty room 3.2 m by 2.8 m with the top wall facing north, and someone who is Kua 1, whose Tian Yi direction is east. Two placements both end with you looking east:

PlacementYou lookOur score
Desk against the west wall, wall behind your chairEast90
Desk against the east wall, you looking at the wallEast58

Same room, same person, same direction, 32 points apart. That gap is one decision counted twice: our model adds 14 for sitting with a wall behind you and the room in front, and subtracts 18 for having your back to the room and the door. The direction term is identical in both rows, because the direction you look is identical.

These weights are ours. Eight Mansions ranks directions; it does not rank a seating arrangement against a direction, and no school we know of publishes numbers like these. See method and assumptions.

What a square room will not give you

Four walls times two seating arrangements is eight placements and only four directions, each reachable twice. That is more freedom than a bed has, and it still produces no diagonals. For someone whose good directions are mostly diagonal it is thin. Same empty room, someone who is Kua 8:

You lookBest placementScoreStar
WestAgainst the east wall, wall behind the chair92Yan Nian
SouthAgainst the north wall, wall behind the chair56Huo Hai
NorthAgainst the south wall, wall behind the chair50Wu Gui
EastAgainst the west wall, wall behind the chair46Liu Sha

One favorable direction out of four available. That is not the room being awkward — the West group directions are southwest, west, northwest and northeast, and west is the only cardinal one among them. A square room cannot reach the other three with the desk parallel to a wall.

Check your own room

The office desk direction tool asks for the room, the door, the window and your birth date rather than asking you for a direction, so this cannot go wrong by accident. Every result names the wall, the seat, the direction you end up looking, and the star that direction carries for your Kua number.

If you are working out a bed in the same building, use the bedroom layout generator instead, and expect the two tools to send you to different walls. They are answering different questions.
