Can my bed face north, south, east or west?

There is no answer to this that holds for everybody, and any page that gives you one has skipped the step that decides it. Under Eight Mansions (八宅, Ba Zhai) a direction is favorable or unfavorable for a person, worked out from their birth year and sex. The same wall that suits you can be the worst wall in the room for the person you live with.

Two things to settle before the answers below mean anything.

Which way does a bed face? In this tradition a bed is read by the direction the head points — where the headboard is, not where your feet aim. That is the opposite convention from a desk, which is read by the direction the sitter looks. Getting these two backwards is the single most common error in feng shui writing, and it flips every answer.

Which half are you in? Eight Mansions sorts everyone into two groups of four numbers:

• East group — Kua 1, 3, 4 and 9. Favorable directions: north, east, southeast, south.
• West group — Kua 2, 6, 7 and 8. Favorable directions: northeast, southwest, west, northwest.

The Kua number calculator gives you the number from a birth date. It counts the year from the beginning of spring rather than 1 January, which matters if you were born in the first days of February — see born in January, which year counts.

The thing nobody mentions about the cardinal directions

Look at the two lists again. Of the four cardinal directions — north, south, east, west — three belong to the East group and only one belongs to the West group.

North, south and east are all favorable for Kua 1, 3, 4 and 9. West is the only cardinal direction favorable for Kua 2, 6, 7 and 8; their other three good directions are all diagonals.

That asymmetry has a practical consequence in ordinary rooms. Most bedrooms are rectangles with walls running roughly along the compass, so the head of a bed against a wall points roughly at a cardinal direction. If you are East group, three of the four walls are candidates. If you are West group, one is — and if that wall holds the door or a window, you may have no favorable cardinal option at all, and have to choose between a diagonal you cannot reach and a compromise. That case is worked through in small bedroom layout.

Can my bed face north?

Favorable if you are Kua 1, 3, 4 or 9 (East group). Not favorable if you are Kua 2, 6, 7 or 8.

North is worth a note beyond the group split, because it attracts a rule that comes from somewhere else entirely. You will read that sleeping with the head to the north is bad — sometimes attributed to magnetism, sometimes to a funeral custom in which the dead are laid facing north. Neither is Eight Mansions. The first is not a claim the tradition makes and has no support; the second is a custom about the dead, not a placement rule for the living. If you are East group, north is one of your four.

Can my bed face south?

Favorable if you are Kua 1, 3, 4 or 9. Not favorable if you are Kua 2, 6, 7 or 8.

South is often described as the strongest or most auspicious direction in general, which is a different system talking. In Eight Mansions south has no special standing — it is one of the four that suit the East group, and it is one of the four that do not suit the West group.

Can my bed face east?

Favorable if you are Kua 1, 3, 4 or 9. Not favorable if you are Kua 2, 6, 7 or 8.

East is the direction people ask about most, usually after reading that it is associated with growth or with sunrise. Those associations belong to the five-element scheme, not to your personal chart. Whether east suits you still comes down to which group your birth year puts you in.

Can my bed face west?

Favorable if you are Kua 2, 6, 7 or 8 (West group). Not favorable if you are Kua 1, 3, 4 or 9.

This is the mirror of the three above, and it is the one cardinal direction where the West group has a straightforward answer. If you are West group and the west wall is available, that is usually the easiest position in the room to justify.

What about the diagonals?

Northeast, southwest and northwest are favorable for the West group; southeast is favorable for the East group. In a rectangular room a bed cannot point at a diagonal without standing away from the walls at an angle, which most people will not do and which breaks the separate rule about having a solid wall behind the head.

So in practice the diagonals are reachable in rooms with an angled wall, an alcove, or enough space to place a bed off the wall — and otherwise they are a theoretical option. This is the most common reason a chart says one thing and a room allows another.

The honest summary

The question has a definite answer once you know your number, and no answer at all before that. Any of the four cardinal directions is favorable for exactly one of the two groups — three of them for the East group, one for the West.

What none of this says is what happens if you sleep the other way. The tradition assigns directions; it does not measure outcomes, and neither do we.
