A feng shui bedroom for couples with different directions

If one of you is East group and the other is West group, there is no head direction that suits both of you. Your four favorable directions are exactly their four unfavorable ones, and the reverse. That is not a near miss you can split the difference on — the overlap is zero, in every possible pairing, and Eight Mansions contains no rule for averaging two people.
Why the overlap is exactly zero
Eight Mansions (八宅, Ba Zhai) is the compass school this site runs. It turns your birth year into a Kua number, and the Kua number into four favorable and four unfavorable directions. Run every Kua number through this site’s own tables and the eight of them collapse into two sets:

Everyone in a group shares the same four. So two people in the same group agree on all four, every
time, and two people in different groups share none, every time. We checked all 64 pairings of the
eight Kua numbers against src/lib/kua.ts: same group, four shared; different groups, zero shared.
There is no third case.
What differs inside a group is only the ranking. The four favorable directions have names — Sheng Chi (生氣), Yan Nian (延年), Tian Yi (天醫) and Fu Wei (伏位) — and which name lands on which direction changes from one Kua number to the next.
Two people born in the same year can still be split
The Kua arithmetic is different for men and women, so a couple born in the same calendar year are not necessarily in the same group. Across 1900–2100, a male and a female born in the same year land in opposite groups in 135 of the 201 years, and in the same group in 66.
Take two people both born in 1990. The Kua number calculator makes the man Kua 1 (Kan, East group) and the woman Kua 8 (Gen, West group). Here is every direction, from this site’s tables:

What the same room returns for each of you
Run the bedroom layout generator twice with the same room and two different birth dates and the ranking turns over. Room 4.0 m wide by 3.5 m deep, the top wall facing South, one 0.9 m door in the bottom wall with its center 0.6 m from the corner, bed 1.6 m by 2.0 m.

The wall the tool puts first for one of them is a wall it calls compromised for the other, in both directions. Notice also that the two columns are not mirror images. Everything in the room that is not a direction — the door, the walking space — scores the same for both of them, and the favorable and unfavorable weights are not the same size, so the numbers do not simply flip sign.
No arithmetic settles this, including ours
Our generator takes one birth date, and there is no two-person mode, because there is nothing to compute. Averaging two Kua numbers produces a third Kua number belonging to neither of you. Averaging the scores describes an imaginary person. Splitting the difference between two directions produces a bearing Eight Mansions does not classify at all. A tool that offers a couples answer is inventing the rule it reports, and you should ask it which source that came from.
The building has a group of its own too, worked out from its sitting direction rather than from anyone’s birthday, and for a cross-group couple exactly one of you matches it. We are not going to tell you that settles whose direction the bed follows, because we cannot point to a source that says it does.
Which of you has options depends on the building
A headboard flat against a wall points at one of four directions, and in a room with square corners those four are the ones the building’s walls happen to face. That produces a real asymmetry, and it has nothing to do with either of you:
- Walls facing north, south, east and west. The East group partner can reach three of their four — North, East and South. The West group partner can reach exactly one, West, because West is the only cardinal direction in their set.
- Walls facing the diagonals. It reverses. The West group partner reaches three — Northeast, Southwest and Northwest — and the East group partner reaches one, Southeast.
So in most homes the East group partner has three candidate walls and the West group partner has one. That is a fact about the floor plan, not a judgment about either person.
If you are both in the same group
Then only the order is in question, which is a much smaller disagreement. It still shows up. Same 4.0 m by 3.5 m room but with the top wall facing North and the door in the left wall, a man born in 1990 (Kua 1) and a woman born in 1989 (Kua 4):
- For the Kua 1 partner the ranking is East 97, South 96, North 88, West 26.
- For the Kua 4 partner it is North 102, East 101, South 92, West 16.
Different first choice, one point apart in both cases — and every one of those first three walls is in both people’s favorable four. That is a trade you can actually make. The cross-group version is not.
What practitioners do with a cross-group couple, none of which we can rank for you: give the bed to one person and leave it; follow whichever partner’s sleep is the reason you are asking; or take one person’s direction for the bed and give the other theirs in the seats they use elsewhere in the home.
What the tradition does not say
The tradition names a direction favorable or unfavorable. It does not predict what happens to either of you, and neither do we — see method and assumptions for what we compute and where we stop. If your bed has pointed at one partner’s unfavorable direction for years with no complaints, that is not a contradiction to resolve.
