A bedroom door and a bathroom door directly opposite each other across a hallway is one of the most common layouts in modern housing, and one of the most asked about. The tradition does object to it. The fix is a curtain, and the reason is worth understanding before you spend anything.

What counts, and what does not

The fault is two doorways facing each other with the bathroom open to the bedroom’s line of sight. Some near-misses that do not count:

Two doors square on across a hallway is the clash. Offset doors, or a turn between them, are not.

The bathroom is next to the bedroom but its door opens onto a different wall.
The doors are offset rather than square on, so neither looks into the other.
There is a hallway turn between them.

If you have to stand in the bedroom doorway and crane to see the bathroom, this does not apply.

The en suite is a different case

A bathroom opening directly into the bedroom is not the same fault, and it is treated separately. The tradition’s concern there is the wall the bed head shares, not the door: a bed head against a wall with a toilet or a soil pipe on the other side is the item to fix, and the fix is to slide the bed along the wall so the head is clear of the plumbing.

If your en suite door also faces the bed directly, both apply — but the bed head wall is the one that matters more, and it is the one people miss.

What the tradition reads into it

The bathroom is the room Eight Mansions most wants contained. The bedroom is the room it most wants still. Putting the openings of the two square on to each other is read as the first working against the second, and the reading attached to it is unsettled sleep and a household whose health is not steady.

That is what the tradition states. It is a way of reading the layout, not a prediction about the people in it.

Hang a curtain

On one of the two doors. Not both — one breaks the line, and the second does nothing the first has not already done. Most people put it on the bathroom side, because that is the door that gets left open.

Shutting the bathroom door works just as well and costs nothing, if the household will actually do it. A self-closing hinge takes the decision away.

You will also see six coins recommended above the bathroom door frame. That is the traditional object for a door clash and it is worth knowing so you can recognize it, but it does not do anything the curtain has not.

The part that is not symbolic: run the extraction and keep the floor dry. Damp drifting into a hallway is the literal version of the thing this fault describes. If the bathroom has no window, which is common in newer buildings, an extractor with a run-on timer and a light left on does more for the layout than any object will.

Two things not to do. Do not hang a mirror on either door to reflect the problem away: a mirror facing a bedroom door is a fault in its own right, and one facing a bed is the one thing every school agrees on. You would be trading a small problem for a bigger one.

And do not move the bedroom over this. Which room should be a bedroom is a much larger question, and a doorway clash is nowhere near the top of it.

Fix the bed first

Inside the bedroom, the door clash is not the first thing to deal with. The bed itself comes first: in the command position, head against a solid wall, nothing structural overhead, no mirror facing it, and the head wall not shared with bathroom plumbing.
