Chinese zodiac 2027: year of the Fire Goat

2027 is 丁未 — the yin Fire Goat, also called the Sheep or Ram. It is number 44 of the sixty-year cycle.

When it actually runs

6 February 2027 → 25 January 2028

The zodiac year begins on Chinese New Year, not 1 January. Anyone born in January 2027, or in early February before 6 February 2027, belongs to the previous animal year.

Why you will see a different date elsewhere

Some sites will tell you 2027 begins in early February on a different day, and they are not simply wrong — they are answering a different question. Two boundaries are in use:

The two can be almost two weeks apart. Neither is a mistake; they belong to different calculations. Our Kua number calculator uses the spring boundary for exactly that reason.

The same animal is not the same year

The animal repeats every twelve years, but the animal paired with an element repeats only every sixty. That is why 2027 is not interchangeable with the last Goat year:

YearCycle nameElement and animalStarted
2027 丁未 Fire Goat 6 February 2027
2015 乙未 Wood Goat 19 February 2015
2003 癸未 Water Goat 1 February 2003
1991 辛未 Metal Goat 15 February 1991
1979 己未 Earth Goat 28 January 1979
1967 丁未 Fire Goat 9 February 1967

Only the row sixty years back carries the same cycle name as 2027. The twelve-year steps share the animal but pair it with a different element.

The directions this year disturbs

Alongside the animal, every year marks out a few compass directions that the almanac tradition says to leave alone — not to avoid living in, but to avoid digging up, knocking through or renovating. For 2027 they are:

NameSits inBearingWhat it means
Tai Sui (太歲) 未 — Southwest 202.5°–217.5° The year sits here. Practice is to leave it undisturbed rather than to avoid the room.
Sui Po (歲破) 丑 — Northeast 22.5°–37.5° Directly opposite Tai Sui, and treated the same way.
Robbery Sha (劫煞) 申 — Southwest 232.5°–247.5° First of the three.
Disaster Sha (災煞) 酉 — West 262.5°–277.5° The middle one, opposite the year trine peak.
Year Sha (歲煞) 戌 — Northwest 292.5°–307.5° Last of the three.

Tai Sui is where the year itself sits, Sui Po is the point directly opposite it, and the three Sha are a run of three neighboring positions worked out from the year's combination group — 2027 belongs to the Wood group, whose peak is East, so the three Sha fall opposite it in the West.

The whole rule is still is better than moving. Nobody in this tradition suggests you stop using a room; the advice is about construction, demolition and heavy work.

These dates do not match the ones above

This is the part most almanac sites get wrong. The zodiac animal changes at Chinese New Year — 6 February 2027 — but Tai Sui and the three Sha follow the stem-branch year, which turns at the start of spring on 4 February 2027, 2 days earlier. How far apart the two fall is different every year: in 2026 it was thirteen days.

So between 4 February and 6 February 2027 the directions above are already those of the Fire Goat year while the animal is still the one before — a window of 2 days in 2027. Both statements are correct at the same time. Our calculators use whichever boundary the calculation calls for, and say which one they used.

Which animals are in a relation with 2027

The twelve branches sit on a wheel, and a handful of them stand in a named relation to whichever branch holds the year. This is structure — which positions face, cross or pair with which — not a forecast about anybody.

AnimalBranchRelation to 2027
Rat Harm pair with the year (害太歲)
Ox Directly opposite the year (沖太歲); Punishment group with the year (刑太歲)
Goat Same branch as the year (值太歲)
Dog Break pair with the year (破太歲); Punishment group with the year (刑太歲)

You will see longer lists elsewhere. We list only the relations that follow from the branch wheel itself — same position, directly opposite, the harm pair, the break pair, and the punishment group. Where a site names an animal we cannot derive, we leave it out rather than copy it across.

How the Goat sits against other signs

Traditional practice reads the twelve animals as a wheel. Signs four apart are treated as the strongest matches; the sign directly opposite, six apart, is the clash. This is structure, not prediction — it says nothing about any particular relationship.

AnimalRelation to the Goat
Goat Same sign
Horse Neither
Rabbit Strongest match
Pig Strongest match
Ox Direct clash
Rat Neither

Where these dates come from

The cycle names are arithmetic: the sequence has repeated every sixty years without a break, so any year's name follows from counting. The New Year dates come from the lunar calendar and are precomputed for 1900–2100. We check the arithmetic against an independent calendar library for every year in that range, and check the New Year boundary on the day before, the day of, and the day after each one. If the two ever disagreed the site would fail to build.

What you will not find here is a forecast for your year ahead. See method and assumptions for what we do and do not claim.
