Year of the Goat 2027: what the Fire in Fire Goat means
Published 2026-08-19
2027 is the year of the Goat, and its full name is 丁未 — the Fire Goat. It runs from 6 February 2027 to 25 January 2028, so about five weeks of the calendar year 2027 are not in it.
“Fire” is not decoration on the front of “Goat”. The animal is only half of a year’s name, and the two halves move on different clocks: the animal comes round every twelve years, the pair comes round every sixty. The last Fire Goat year was 1967. The four Goat years since then were each a different Goat.
Goat, Sheep or Ram
All three words name the same year. The Chinese term is the branch 未 (Wei), and it does not draw the line English draws between a goat, a sheep and a ram, so there is no correct translation to pick and no wrong one to avoid. This site says Goat because that is the label in its code. If you searched for year of the Sheep 2027 or year of the Ram 2027, this is the same year.
When the Goat year runs
- Starts 6 February 2027, the day of Chinese New Year.
- Ends 25 January 2028, the day before the following new year on 26 January 2028.
Anyone born in January 2027 is therefore not a Goat, and neither is anyone born on 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 February 2027. Those birthdays sit in the year before: 丙午, the Fire Horse, which began on 17 February 2026. Nothing about the zodiac year starts on 1 January, and the offset is not a rounding detail — it is more than a month of 2027 belonging to the previous animal.
The dates are the Chinese calendar’s own and are counted in China time, UTC+8. A birth late at night or early in the morning somewhere else can land on the other side of the boundary once converted.
Where the “Fire” comes from
A year name is made by pairing two lists that both step forward one place per year:
- Ten heavenly stems (天干): 甲 乙 丙 丁 戊 己 庚 辛 壬 癸. Taken two at a time they carry the five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water. 丁 is the second of the two Fire stems, which is why 2027 reads as Fire.
- Twelve earthly branches (地支): 子 丑 寅 卯 辰 巳 午 未 申 酉 戌 亥. Each carries an animal. 未 carries the Goat.
Ten and twelve do not produce 120 names. They produce 60, because the two lists never break step: an odd position in one list can only ever meet an odd position in the other. 丁未 is number 44 of those sixty.
Three things follow from that, and you can check each of them against the table below:
- There are five possible Goat years, not ten — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water Goat.
- Every Goat year is yin. 未 sits at an odd position among the branches, so it only meets the odd stems, and those are the yin ones. A yang Goat year does not exist. If a site offers you one, it did not get it from the cycle.
- Twelve years moves the stem forward two places, which is exactly one element. So consecutive Goat years step through the elements in order and return to the start after five of them — sixty years.
The recent Goat years
| Year | Cycle name | Element and animal | Number in the sixty | Year began |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1967 | 丁未 | Fire Goat | 44 | 9 February 1967 |
| 1979 | 己未 | Earth Goat | 56 | 28 January 1979 |
| 1991 | 辛未 | Metal Goat | 8 | 15 February 1991 |
| 2003 | 癸未 | Water Goat | 20 | 1 February 2003 |
| 2015 | 乙未 | Wood Goat | 32 | 19 February 2015 |
| 2027 | 丁未 | Fire Goat | 44 | 6 February 2027 |
Read down the cycle-name column. Only 1967 carries the same name as 2027; the rows in between share the animal and nothing else. The next Fire Goat year is 2087, and the next Goat year of any kind is 2039, which is 己未, the Earth Goat.
Every value in that table is worked out from the year number by ganZhiForYear in
src/lib/zodiac.ts, not copied from a list, so it does not run out at either end. The
2027 zodiac page runs the same function and shows each year’s start and end
dates with it.
Two year boundaries, both correct
The zodiac animal changes at Chinese New Year. The stem-branch year used for birth charts and for Eight Mansions (八宅, Ba Zhai) — the compass school this site runs — changes at the beginning of spring (立春), an astronomical moment that lands on 3, 4 or 5 February. In 2027 that moment is 4 February 2027 at 09:46 UTC+8, two days before the animal turns.
So for someone born on 4 or 5 February 2027, the stem-branch year is already 丁未 while the animal year is still the Horse. Both readings are right; they are answers to different questions, and our Kua number calculator uses the spring boundary because that is the one Eight Mansions counts from.
The order of the two is not fixed either, which is worth knowing before you trust a rule of thumb about it. Across the Goat years above the gap ranges from 2 days to 15, and twice the new year came first: in 1979 Chinese New Year was 28 January 1979, seven days before the beginning of spring on 4 February 1979. Anyone who tells you spring always comes first is describing a common case, not the rule.
What the name does not tell you
Naming is the whole of what this article does. 丁未 says which of the sixty positions 2027 occupies and when that position starts and stops. It says nothing about what the year holds for you or for anyone born in it, and we do not either — see method and assumptions for where our calculations stop.
If you came looking for what a Fire Goat year does to your money, your health or your relationships, that is a forecast, and nothing in the sixty-year cycle produces one.
